The Rundown: Duke tries to build his team while Cobra Commander prepares to bring terror to the world.
After defeats against unknown forces and more dangers arising, Duke is tasked by Colonel Hawk to train his new team codename: G.I. Joe to deal with those threats. Unfortunately, Cobra Commander and Destro are moving ahead of the team using advanced energon based technology that the Joes aren’t aware of.
After Hawke confronts Duke about the team and his choice of Baroness, they are given their first mission. A mission that will bring the team face to face with the forces of Cobra and their advanced weaponry. A mission many of them might not survive.
The Story: Williamson crafts a story with great tension and suspense. There’s some great action in the story as well and I find myself intrigued with these team dynamics and their tension. I like having this team starting on the back foot with things that they have to overcome and that suspense and tension add great elements to this first issue. I’m intrigued to see where it goes next.
The Art: Reilly offers some great minimalistic art throughout the issue and there are some key moments that are brilliantly detailed to set the tone of the scene.
